Three nationally significant Gulf Coast landscapes
The ongoing tragedy along the Gulf Coast clearly shows why we need strong environmental laws and regulations that are based upon sound science and engineering. There are three nationally significant centers of biological diversity along the eastern Gulf Coast (and one in north central Florida). For a summary click here; for the full research paper click here. These areas are a priority in looking ahead to the proper conservation of Gulf Coast ecosystems. Although the short term problems have to be addressed immediately, in the longer run we need a full system of protected areas along the coast, and restoration of Gulf Coast biodiversity using scientifically justifiable methods.
